To study in Canada, all international students must have a study permit. The study permit issuance is approved at the discretion of the Canadian immigration officers. However, refusal of study permits is common for various reasons. 

What should you do if your study permit is refused?

If an international student is refused a study permit by the IRCC, there are two ways by which an applicant can address the refusal:

• Appeal the decision: If the applicant trusts the application submitted by them has met all the necessary documentation mandated by IRCC, but their study permit was refused incorrectly, then the applicant can appeal the decision and request a reconsideration.

• Submit a new application: The applicant can submit a new one if the applicant believes the grounds of refusal are valid. The new application should be made, giving utmost attention to minute details to address the previous grounds for refusal. 

Reasons for refusal

• Proof of Financial Support: Your study permit may be accepted when you share the proof of your financial support. IRCC mandates that international students should provide proof that they have the funds to cover their studies and the cost of living in Canada.

• Intention to Leave the Country: A study permit visa has a limited validity period and an expiration date. While applying, you must convey to the immigration officer that you will leave the country after your visa expires. This has no connection with your intent to extend your visa application or restoration.

• Choice of Study Program: Study permit applications are often refused when the immigration officer does not find the logic of your choice of study program. When the study program chosen in Canada does not align with the applicant's educational background or employment, the applicant will be refused.

• Acceptance Letter: Before applying for a study permit, you must have an acceptance letter from the Designated Learning Institution in Canada. You need to meet the requirements laid down by the program. If the immigration offer doubts your application, your study permit will be refused.
