The International Experience Class, or IEC, is a program designed to allow young adults from participating countries to work and live in Canada. Individuals successful under one of the programs of the IEC will be authorized for a Canadian work permit without requiring a labor Market Impact Assessment. This program allows one to work and temporarily live in Canada for a maximum of one year. Interestingly, this program includes a reciprocal bilateral agreement between Canada and other nations, allowing Canadian citizens similar privileges to travel and work in the participating countries.
Individuals aged 18 to 35 willing to temporarily live and work in Canada for international work experience can create a profile and upload it to the IEC pool. Later, the IEC work permits are offered through a random selection process. However, the selection entirely depends on the quota allotted for each program and country. There are three different programs under the IEC, each with different requirements and forms of work authorization.
Working Holiday: Under this program, the individual has the liberty to work for any employer in Canada as they receive an open work permit. The individuals are allowed to change employers and locations in Canada during their stay.
Young Professionals: Through this program, foreign nationals from participating countries can gain Canadian work experience. However, the visa offered is an employer-specific work permit, so the individual needs to work with the same employer and stay in the same location.
International Co-op Internship: This program allows international students to opt for an internship or work experience in Canada. The applicants receive an employer-specific work permit and need to follow the restrictions.
There is a five-step process for foreign nationals of participating nations to apply for IEC:
Creating an IEC profile
Receiving an invitation to apply
Accepting the invitation to apply
Submitting work permit application
Receiving the work permit
